The best off-page SEO tools depend on the job. For your own links, Google Search Console and Ahrefs Free cost nothing. For competitor links, Ahrefs starts at $29 a month and Semrush at $139. Google Alerts tracks mentions, BuzzStream ($49) runs outreach, and Qwoted connects you with journalists. Most small sites need two or three, not ten.
You searched for off-page tools and every list you found was written by a tool that ranked itself first. The real question is simpler: which job are you stuck on? Seeing your links, finding link targets, sending outreach, getting quoted, or tracking reviews. Each needs a different tool, and several of the best ones are free.
We make Backlinkster, a link exchange, and it appears below with the same facts as everything else. Every price was checked on the vendor's own site on 21 October 2026; where a vendor didn't show something, we say so.
Which off-page SEO tools are free?
Google Search Console, Ahrefs Free, Google Alerts and Google Business Profile cover the basics at no cost, and a new site can run on them for months.
Google Search Console
The Links report shows who links to you, your most-linked pages and your top anchor text. Google's Links report help page notes that tables are limited to 1,000 rows and the report is a sample, not every link. It only covers sites you own.
Ahrefs Free
Formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, it shows backlinks and runs a site audit for websites you verify. The Ahrefs Free page lists "1K backlinks & keywords visible at once" and says competitor sites need a paid plan.
Google Alerts
Google Alerts emails you when your brand or a topic appears on the web, as it happens, daily or weekly. It is the simplest way to catch unlinked mentions you can turn into links. Coverage is patchy, so treat it as a net, not a census.
Which tools are best for competitor backlink research?
Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz Pro and Majestic all show who links to any site; the differences are price and which metrics you prefer. Our page on the best backlink tool compares their link indexes in more depth.
Ahrefs
Ahrefs pricing lists Starter at $29 a month, Lite at $129, Standard at $249 and Advanced at $449. Broken backlinks and Content Explorer, which helps find mentions and link prospects, start at Standard.
Semrush
Semrush prices start at $139 a month for the SEO plan ($117.33 a month billed annually), with a free account limited to 10 reports a day and a seven-day trial.
Moz Pro
Moz Pro pricing shows Standard at $99 a month ($79 paid yearly) and an entry plan at $49 a month for a single website. Moz is the source of the Domain Authority metric many link sellers quote.
Majestic
Majestic's plans start at $49.99 a month for Lite and $99.99 for Pro, excluding VAT. It is the home of Trust Flow and Citation Flow; email alerts and site comparison are Pro features.
Which tools help with outreach and PR?
Outreach tools manage the emailing; PR platforms bring journalist requests to you, so you answer instead of pitching cold.
BuzzStream
BuzzStream's pricing page lists Starter at $49 a month for one user and 500 contacts, with link monitoring for 1,000 links, and Growth at $174 a month with automated follow-ups. A free trial is offered.
Qwoted
Qwoted is a network where journalists post requests for expert sources and you pitch a reply. A free account is available; we didn't check which features it includes.
Which tool covers local off-page SEO?
Google Business Profile is the one that matters for local search, and it is free. Its performance report shows views, clicks and other interactions on Search and Maps for verified profiles. Google's local ranking guidance says reviews and links both feed prominence.
Where does a link exchange fit?
A link exchange is a way to place relevant links, not a research tool, so it sits alongside the tools above rather than replacing them.
Backlinkster
Backlinkster matches site owners for 1-for-1 in-content link swaps, and each swap is verified by API. The submitted link must be an article URL on the member's own domain, and one published link can't be reused for two live swaps. Free covers 5 swaps a month; Pro is $19 and the Backlinkster plan $49.

When Backlinkster is not the right fit
Skip it if you need data rather than links, because it doesn't show competitor backlinks or track rankings. It also isn't right for a site with no published articles (the link you offer must be a real article URL), for anyone who wants a large number of links fast, or for niches where a reciprocal link would look out of place.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free off-page SEO tool?
Google Search Console. It shows the links Google has actually found to your site, your most-linked pages and your anchor text, at no cost. Pair it with Google Alerts for brand mentions.
Do I need Ahrefs or Semrush for off-page SEO?
Not to start. They are most useful for researching competitors' links. A small site can begin with free tools and add a paid plan for a month when it plans a link campaign.
Which tool is best for backlink outreach?
BuzzStream is built for it, starting at $49 a month. Many small sites manage outreach in a spreadsheet and their normal email account until the volume makes that hard.
Are off-page SEO tools that build links automatically safe?
No. Google's spam policies list "using automated programs or services to create links to your site" as link spam. Use tools for research and tracking, not for creating links.
