Domain Authority still matters as a benchmark, not as a ranking factor. Google has said repeatedly that it does not use Moz's DA score, so raising the number changes nothing by itself. What DA still does well is compare link profiles: your site against the ones ranking above you, or a link prospect against its peers. Track referring domains and rankings; use DA to read them.
You are probably asking because a report put your DA at 14, a competitor's at 38, and someone is selling you "DA 50 backlinks" to close the gap. Here is what the score can and cannot tell you.
Does Google use Domain Authority?
No. Google has denied using Domain Authority at least seven times across six years. A Search Engine Journal review of John Mueller's statements (published January 10, 2023) collects them: "Google doesn't use 'domain authority'" in December 2016, "that's a metric from an SEO company" in 2019, "Google doesn't use Domain Authority at all when it comes to Search crawling, indexing, or ranking" in mid-2020, and "you do not need DA for Google Search" on Reddit in 2022. The article's conclusion is that DA "is definitely not a ranking factor".
What Google does use is links. Its SEO starter guide says PageRank "uses links and is one of the fundamental algorithms at Google", among "many ranking signals". DA is a third party's estimate of roughly the same thing, built from Moz's own crawl, which is why it tends to move in the same direction as rankings without causing them. What is domain authority explains how the score is built.
What Domain Authority still measures
DA still measures the strength of a link profile relative to other sites, and that is a real thing worth knowing. The same is true of Ahrefs' Domain Rating, which Ahrefs describes as "the relative strength of a website's backlink profile" on "a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100", counting only domains with at least one followed link. Ahrefs notes DR correlates strongly with search traffic while advising against targeting DR directly. The scores are proxies: useful for comparison, useless as a goal. Domain Authority vs Domain Rating covers how the two differ.
The logarithmic scale matters when you read the number. Ahrefs' example is that moving from DR 70 to 71 takes far more than moving from 20 to 21, so a 10-point gap near the bottom of the scale is small and the same gap near the top is enormous.
When Domain Authority still matters
DA matters in three situations, and in each one it is a comparison, never a target.
- Sizing up a query. If the five pages ranking for your keyword sit on DA 35 to 50 sites and you are at DA 12, the gap is probably links, and the query may be a year away. Is 20 domain authority good gives the bands.
- Vetting a link prospect. A site offering you a link at DA 3 with no traffic is not worth the effort; a DA 40 site in your niche with real readers is. The score is the first filter, not the decision. How to vet a link swap partner covers the checks that follow.
- Reporting direction over time. A DA that climbs from 12 to 24 over a year says your link profile grew. It does not say your rankings did; check those separately.
A worked example: your site is DA 14 with 60 referring domains, the top-ranking competitor is DA 38 with 900. That tells you the competitor has roughly fifteen times the linking sites, which is the honest size of the job. The DA numbers alone, 14 against 38, would have understated it.
When Domain Authority is a trap
DA is a trap whenever it becomes the thing you buy or optimise. Three common versions:
- Paying for "high DA" links. Sellers price links by DA because it is easy to show, but a DA 50 domain with no readers is usually an expired domain or a link farm. Google's spam policies treat buying links for ranking purposes as link spam regardless of the score.
- Chasing the score with spam. Directory submissions and profile links can nudge DA while adding nothing Google counts.
- Comparing across tools. Moz DA, Ahrefs DR and Semrush Authority Score use different crawls and formulas. A DA 30 and a DR 30 are not the same thing.
What to track instead of Domain Authority
Track the inputs and the outcomes directly: referring domains, rankings for your target queries, and organic clicks. Referring domains tell you whether the link profile is actually growing; rankings and clicks tell you whether it is working. Referring domains vs backlinks explains why domains are the better count.
If the problem the DA report exposed is that your site has too few links from real sites, increase domain authority without buying links lists the routes. One of them is trading in-content links with site owners in related niches, which is what Backlinkster is for: each swap is verified by API, and the free plan covers 5 swaps a month.
Frequently asked questions
Does domain authority still matter in 2026? As a benchmark, yes. As a ranking factor, no. Google has said at least seven times since 2016 that it does not use Moz's DA. Use the score to compare your link profile with competitors and to filter link prospects, and measure results with rankings and referring domains.
Is Domain Authority a Google ranking factor? No. John Mueller said in 2020 that Google "doesn't use Domain Authority at all when it comes to Search crawling, indexing, or ranking". DA is Moz's estimate of link strength, computed from Moz's own crawl.
Does a higher DA mean higher rankings? Not directly. Sites with strong link profiles tend to have both high DA and good rankings, because links drive both. Raising DA through links Google does not count, such as directory and profile links, raises the number without moving rankings.
What is a good Domain Authority score? One that matches or beats the sites ranking for the queries you want. There is no universal good number because the scale is logarithmic and relative; most small business sites sit well under 30.
Should I buy high DA backlinks to raise my score? No. Paid links that pass ranking credit are link spam under Google's policies, and DA is not something Google rewards. Spend the money or time on links from sites with readers in your niche.
Does Domain Authority matter for AI search? Only indirectly. AI assistants cite pages that are already cited and discussed elsewhere, which correlates with a strong link profile, but they do not read Moz scores any more than Google does.
The bottom line
Domain Authority still matters for one job: comparing link profiles. It tells you how far behind a competitor you are and whether a prospect is worth a look. It is not a Google ranking factor, Google has said so repeatedly, and buying or spamming your way to a higher number buys nothing. Grow referring domains from real sites, watch rankings and clicks, and let DA rise as a side effect.
