Should You Build Links to Your Homepage or Inner Pages?

Inner pages, for most sites. Homepage links arrive on their own from brand mentions, directories and press, so deliberate effort is better spent on the specific pages you need to rank. The exception is a brand-new site with little content โ there, homepage links build the domain-level trust everything else borrows from.
Why the question comes up at all
Every site has two kinds of pages. The homepage is what people link to when they're talking about you โ "we use Backlinkster", "check out this tool". Inner pages are what people link to when they're talking about a topic โ a guide, a study, a comparison.
That split matters because link building effort is finite. If you have ten hours a month, pointing all ten at the homepage and hoping authority trickles down to the page you actually need to rank is the single most common way that effort gets wasted.
Authority flows down, but it leaks on the way
The mechanism is worth understanding rather than taking on faith.
PageRank passes through links, and a portion of the value is lost at every hop โ that damping factor has been part of the model since the original Brin and Page paper. It's also divided: a homepage linking out to 40 places passes each of them a fraction of what it holds.
So a link to your homepage does help a guide four clicks deep โ but by the time it arrives, after two or three divisions and dampings, very little of it is left. A link pointing directly at that guide arrives whole.
There's a second loss that people forget about: relevance. A backlink carries context โ the anchor text, the sentence around it, the topic of the linking page. A journalist linking to your homepage in a piece about payroll software passes a payroll-shaped signal to a page that is about your company generally. Link directly to your payroll integration guide and that context lands where it can be used.
What a "deep link ratio" is
The deep link ratio is the share of your backlinks that point somewhere other than the homepage. Backlink tools usually show it implicitly โ sort referring domains by target URL and see how top-heavy the list is.
There is no correct number, and anyone quoting one precisely is guessing. What's useful is the shape, and the shape differs by site type:
| Site type | What a natural profile looks like |
|---|---|
| Local service business | Heavily homepage โ citations, directories, and "the plumber we used" mentions all point at the root |
| Early-stage SaaS | Homepage-dominant at first, shifting toward inner pages as content and docs accumulate |
| Content site / publisher | Strongly deep โ nobody links to a blog's homepage, they link to the post |
| Ecommerce | Split: homepage from brand mentions, category and product pages from reviews and roundups |
The diagnostic question isn't "am I at 70/30?" It's simpler: is the page I need to rank getting any links of its own? For most sites the honest answer is no, and that's the gap to close.
When homepage links are genuinely the right call
Don't read this as "homepage links are bad". They're the right target when:
- The site is new. Before you have pages worth linking to, domain-level trust is what you're building. A young site with three thin posts doesn't need deep links โ it needs to look like a real business.
- The link was always going to land there. Podcast bios, directory listings, partner pages, Crunchbase, "as featured in" mentions and most digital PR naturally point at the root. Forcing a deep link into a guest bio looks manufactured and usually gets edited out.
- The site is small. If you have twelve pages and the homepage links to all of them, the leak is one hop and barely matters.
- Your homepage is the page that ranks. Local businesses and single-product brands often target their main commercial term on the homepage itself. Then the homepage is the inner page.
When inner page links are the right call
- You have a specific ranking target. A guide sitting at position 14 for a term you want will move faster from two direct links than from twenty homepage links.
- The page is commercial. Pricing and product pages rarely earn links directly, which is why the usual play is to earn links to something linkable and route the value internally โ covered in building links to product and pricing pages.
- You're building topical depth. A cluster where each page has its own external link reads as genuine coverage. A cluster where only the homepage has links reads as one page with a lot of attachments.
The practical split
For an established site, a reasonable working rule is: let the homepage links happen, and spend your deliberate effort on inner pages. Brand mentions, directories and press will keep feeding the root whether you work at it or not. Nobody is going to accidentally link to your comparison guide.
Then close the loop internally. Every link you earn to a guide is worth more if that guide passes value onward:
- Find the pages that already have the most referring domains.
- Add internal links from those pages to the ones you need to rank โ in body copy, with descriptive anchors, not in a sidebar.
- Keep the path short. Two clicks from a well-linked page is fine; five is not.
- Fix orphans. A page with no internal links pointing at it receives nothing, no matter how strong your homepage is.
This is the whole reason link juice is worth thinking about as plumbing rather than magic: you're deciding where the pressure goes.
One more thing that trips people up in link exchanges specifically: it's tempting to always request the homepage because it feels like the safest ask. It isn't โ a swap where both sides point at each other's homepages is the most obvious reciprocal pattern there is, and it wastes a placement you could have aimed at a page that needs it. Backlinkster places every swap as an in-content link, so pointing it at a specific guide is the natural default rather than an awkward request. See the plans โ the free tier includes five verified swaps a month.
Frequently asked questions
Should a new website build links to the homepage first? Usually yes. Until you have pages worth linking to, domain-level trust is the constraint. Once you have a handful of genuinely useful guides, shift deliberate effort toward those and let the homepage keep collecting brand mentions passively.
Does linking to my homepage help my inner pages rank? Somewhat, but the value is divided among everything the homepage links to and reduced at each hop. A direct link to the target page is worth considerably more than a homepage link that eventually reaches it through two or three internal steps.
What is a good deep link ratio? There's no verified benchmark, and it varies enormously by site type. A publisher is naturally deep-link heavy; a local business is naturally homepage heavy. The more useful test is whether the individual page you're trying to rank has any external links of its own.
Can too many homepage links look unnatural? On their own, no โ most real profiles are homepage-weighted. It becomes a pattern worth worrying about only when combined with other signals: exact-match anchors, low-quality sources, or a burst of links in a short window.
Should link exchange partners link to my homepage or a blog post? A relevant inner page, almost always. It's more useful for ranking, more contextually relevant, and far less obvious as a reciprocal footprint than two homepages pointing at each other.
What if my most linked page isn't the one I want to rank? That's normal and fixable. Add prominent in-content internal links from the well-linked page to the target, with a descriptive anchor. That page is an asset โ use it as a distribution point rather than letting it sit there.
The bottom line
Homepage links build the account; inner page links spend it. Most sites already get the first kind for free through brand mentions and directories, so the deliberate work belongs on the pages that have a ranking job to do โ then internal links carry whatever the homepage does collect to where it's needed. If you can only answer one question before your next campaign, make it: which specific URL is this link for?
