Link Building for AI Startups and AI Tools

Link Building for AI Startups and AI Tools

Link building for an AI startup means standing out in a category where thousands of similar tools launch every month. List the product in a few reputable AI directories, not hundreds. Then earn links with things others cite: honest benchmarks, model comparisons, open-source code and real usage data. Never publish AI-written pages at scale.

You built an AI tool that does one thing well: transcribing sales calls, writing product descriptions, cleaning spreadsheets. In launch week you saw lists of "300 AI directories to submit to", paid for a couple of featured listings, and got a spike of sign-ups that faded in ten days. Your domain is a few months old, a dozen competitors have near-identical landing pages, and the blogs you emailed never replied. Here is what is different about links in this category.

Why link building is different for AI tools

AI tools face a crowded market, a flood of low-value directories and a strong temptation to fill the site with generated content.

Thousands of near-identical products

When many tools describe themselves the same way, a blogger writing "best AI transcription tools" has no reason to pick yours unless something about it can be checked: a test result, a price, a feature others lack.

A directory boom

Launch guides now list hundreds of AI tool directories, and many of them accept every submission. Google's spam policies list "low-quality directory or bookmark site links" as link spam, so a long list of open-submission directories adds risk, not strength.

Easy access to content generation

An AI team can produce thousands of pages in an afternoon. Google names this directly as scaled content abuse: "using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users". Our page on scaled content abuse explains how it is enforced.

Are AI tool directories worth it?

A few are worth a listing, mostly for the visitors they send rather than for the link.

What a good directory looks like

It has real search traffic, reviews or curated categories, a visible editorial process, and pages that rank for "[task] AI tool" searches. Check whether the outbound link carries nofollow. Many directories nofollow listings, in which case the value is the visitors, not ranking credit. Our page on Product Hunt and startup directory links shows how to check.

What to skip

Directories that accept any URL, show no traffic, or charge for a "dofollow badge" that requires a link back from your site. A required reciprocal badge is close to what Google calls "requiring a link as part of a Terms of Service, contract, or similar arrangement".

Pricing changes often

Featured placements and paid reviews on AI directories are priced by each directory and change frequently. Check the current price on the directory's own submission page before you pay, and compare it with the referral traffic its listed tools appear to get.

What earns links for AI tools

Links in this category go to things a writer can cite as evidence. Most content earns none: Backlinko's analysis of 912 million blog posts found that 94% had zero external links, so a feature page alone is unlikely to attract any.

Benchmarks and honest tests

Publish how your tool performs on a public dataset or a clearly described test, including where it loses. Writers comparing tools link to tests they can point to. Keep the method on the page so others can repeat it.

Model and tool comparisons

A page comparing approaches or models for one task, such as "which speech-to-text models handle accents best", with your own measurements, is a reference page others link to. Disclose that you make one of the tools.

Open-source code and free tools

An open-source library, a free API tier or a small free tool gets mentioned in tutorials and documentation. Links on GitHub itself are nofollow (see whether GitHub links help SEO), but the tutorials developers write about your project usually link editorially.

Usage data

If your product sees how people use AI for a task, an anonymised, aggregated finding ("average call length transcribed per user") gives journalists a number. Original data is the asset most competitors can't copy.

Do AI startups need special optimization for AI search?

No special markup is needed for Google's AI answers. Google's AI features documentation says "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Being cited in comparison pages and discussed on forums is what gets a tool named, which brings you back to the same link and mention work.

Where link swaps fit

A swap with a non-competing tool used by the same people, for example a transcription tool and a CRM blog, is a normal editorial link when each page helps the other's readers. Keep it modest, because Google's spam policies name "excessive link exchanges". Backlinkster's free plan covers 5 swaps a month, each verified by API. See the plans.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI directory backlinks help SEO?

A few reputable directories can help, mostly through the visitors they send. Many nofollow their listings, and open-submission directories fall under what Google's spam policies call low-quality directory links.

How many AI directories should I submit my tool to?

A handful you have checked: real traffic, curated listings and pages that rank for searches in your task. Mass submission to hundreds of directories adds little and can add risk.

Can I use AI to write my startup's blog content?

You can use AI as a tool, but pages generated in bulk without added value are what Google calls scaled content abuse. Pages with your own tests, data and screenshots are the ones that earn links.

How do AI tools get mentioned by ChatGPT and other assistants?

Mostly by appearing in the comparison pages, reviews and forum threads those assistants draw on. Google says no special optimization is needed for its AI features, so the work is the same: be cited on pages people already trust.
