The best profile backlink sites in 2026 are the platforms where you would have an account anyway: LinkedIn, GitHub, Crunchbase, Product Hunt, YouTube, X, Medium, Quora and the review sites in your market. Fill those in and stop there. Nearly all profile links are nofollow or ugc, and bulk profile creation is on Google's link spam list.
The usual situation: someone sent you a "500 high DA profile creation sites" spreadsheet, you have made eleven accounts on forums you will never visit, and the rankings have not moved. This page covers which profile links are worth an hour, what they actually do, and what to do with the rest of the afternoon.
What is a profile backlink?
A profile backlink is a link to your site from the "website" field of an account page on another platform. You create the account, add your URL, and the platform renders it as a link on your public profile. It is the easiest backlink there is, which is exactly why it carries so little weight: anyone can get one, so it says nothing about your site.
Best profile backlink sites in 2026: the ones worth an hour
These are platforms with real audiences, where a profile is a legitimate presence rather than a link-drop. Treat the link as a side effect of being findable there.
| Platform | Who it suits | What the profile does for you |
|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn (personal and company page) | Every business | The profile Google most often shows for a brand or founder search |
| GitHub | Developers, SaaS, open-source tools | Profile and repository links; see are GitHub links good for SEO |
| Crunchbase | Startups and SaaS | A structured company record that AI assistants and journalists read |
| Product Hunt | Software products | A launch page plus maker profile; see do Product Hunt links help SEO |
| YouTube | Anyone publishing video | Channel "about" link and description links |
| X | Brands with an audience there | Bio link, mostly for traffic and identity matching |
| Medium | Writers and founders | Profile link plus a place to republish with a canonical back to your site |
| Quora | Experts who answer questions | Profile link, plus answers that can rank on their own |
| Dev.to, Stack Overflow | Developers | Profile links in communities that rank well for technical queries |
| Behance, Dribbble | Designers and agencies | Portfolio profiles that show up for name searches |
| G2, Capterra, Trustpilot | Software and service businesses | Vendor profiles that review-driven searches and AI assistants pull from |
| Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect | Local businesses | Not a classic backlink, but the listing that drives map results; see local citations |
Ten to fifteen of these is a complete set for almost any site. The point is not the link count. It is that your name, description and URL appear identically on a dozen trusted platforms, which is what makes Google and AI assistants confident about who you are. What is a brand SERP explains why that consistency matters.
Are profile backlinks good for SEO?
As ranking signals, barely. Google's guidance on qualifying outbound links recommends that platforms mark "user-generated content (UGC) links, such as comments and forum posts, with the ugc value," and says links carrying ugc, sponsored or nofollow "will generally not be followed." Most large platforms apply one of those attributes to profile links, so the link does not carry ranking credit. Do ugc-tagged links pass value has the detail.
Two things a good profile link still does:
- Identity. A consistent name, description and URL across platforms helps search engines connect the dots between your site, your founder and your product. That is an entity signal, not a link signal, and it is the main reason to bother.
- AI visibility. A Semrush study published on October 16, 2025, which tracked 1,000 domains across ChatGPT, ChatGPT with Search, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, found that nofollow links correlated with AI mentions almost exactly as strongly as followed links (Pearson 0.340 against 0.334). Being present on the pages assistants read matters more than the link attribute.
What profile links will not do is rank a page for a competitive keyword. A profile on a trusted platform is a presence; an in-content link from a relevant article is a vote. They are different things.
Profile submission sites to skip
The long "profile creation sites" lists mostly contain forum user pages, abandoned social networks, wiki user pages and directories that exist only to host links. Google's spam policies name "forum comments with optimized links in the post or signature," "low-quality directory or bookmark site links," and "using automated programs or services to create links to your site" as link spam. A hundred forum profiles with your keyword in the username is all three at once.
Skip any site where:
- you would never log in again after creating the account;
- the profile page has no content except links;
- the site's recent members are all SEO agencies and link sellers;
- the list sells the site on its "DA" rather than on who uses it.
If a site fails the "would I be happy to be found here" test, the link is not worth having, whatever the score next to it. Are forum signature links worth anything covers the closely related question.
How to make a profile backlink count
- Use the same name and one-line description everywhere. Copy it from your homepage, including the same URL format (with or without www).
- Link to the most relevant page, not always the homepage. A GitHub profile can link to your docs; a Product Hunt page to the product page.
- Fill the profile in. A photo, a bio and some activity make the page worth indexing. Empty profiles often never get crawled.
- Do it once, by hand. Fifteen real profiles over a week looks like a business. Five hundred in a day looks like a script.
What to build after the profiles are done
We make Backlinkster, so take this section as the view of people who sell one of the alternatives. Profile links are a one-afternoon job. The links that move rankings are placed by a person inside a relevant article, and there are a few honest ways to get those:
- Guest posts on sites in your niche, written by you. See how to write a guest post that gets accepted.
- Source requests from journalists through HARO-style services; see the best HARO alternatives.
- 1-for-1 link swaps between real site owners. On Backlinkster, whoever starts a swap publishes the partner's article first, the link must sit in an article on the member's own domain, and each swap is verified by API. The free plan covers 5 swaps a month.
When Backlinkster is not the right fit: if you only want listings and citations (a local business building its map presence, for example), you need directories and review sites, not swaps. If you have no articles of your own to host a partner's link in, or you want one-way links with nothing given back, a guest-post or digital PR route suits you better.
Frequently asked questions
Are profile backlinks dofollow?
Usually not. Most large platforms add nofollow or ugc to profile links, following Google's recommendation for user-generated content. A few smaller sites leave links followed, but the link's value comes from the platform's audience, not from the attribute.
How many profile backlinks should I create? Ten to fifteen, on platforms where you would keep an active account. Beyond that you are creating accounts for the link alone, which is the pattern Google's spam policies describe. More profiles do not add more ranking value.
Do profile backlinks help a new website? A little, indirectly. They give search engines a consistent set of facts about who you are and they can bring a few visitors from each platform. They will not give a new site the authority to rank; for that you need backlinks for a new website placed inside real content.
Can profile backlinks hurt my site? A handful of real profiles cannot. Hundreds of automated profiles with keyword-stuffed usernames can, because Google lists automated link creation and optimized forum profile links as link spam. Google ignores most low-value links rather than penalising them, but there is no upside to testing that.
What is the difference between profile links and citations? A citation is a listing of your business name, address and phone number on a directory, used in local SEO. A profile link is an account page with your URL on it. Local businesses need citations; everyone else needs a small set of real profiles and then in-content links.
