Guest posting means writing an article for someone else's website, with their editor's approval, so their readers see your expertise and you earn a byline and usually one link back. It works when the article is useful to that site's audience first. It stops working when it is a vehicle for links, which Google has warned about since 2017.
Say you run a small accounting-software site. A bookkeeping blog with 8,000 monthly readers publishes your piece on "how to reconcile a bank statement in 20 minutes", credits you in a short bio, and links once to your free reconciliation template. That is the whole tactic, and it is the version that still holds up.
How do guest posts work?
A guest post moves through five steps, and the editor, not you, controls most of them.
- You find a site whose readers match your customers and that publishes outside contributors.
- You pitch a specific angle, not a general topic.
- The editor accepts, asks for changes, or ignores you. Ahrefs reached out to 180 sites with "write for us" pages and only 25.5% replied (Ahrefs), so expect silence from most.
- You write the article to the site's standards, usually with one contextual link or a link in your bio.
- The site publishes it under your name, and you promote it.
The editor's incentive is a good article. Yours is exposure and a link. When both are served, everyone benefits.
What does a good guest post look like?
A good guest post answers one question the host site's readers already ask and has not been answered there yet. Lilach Bullock's SEO contributor guidelines are a useful public example of what editors want: a result you can show, case studies with real numbers, 1,500 to 3,500 words, and one contextual link. They reject beginner definitions, recycled advice, and "content written only to earn a link". Editorial guest posts there are unpaid, and sponsored placements follow a separate process.
Compare two pitches to the same SEO blog. "10 Link Building Tips" is generic and will be declined. "How we got 14 referring domains in 90 days for a 12-page site, with the outreach emails" names a result and a method. The second gets read.
What are the benefits of guest posting?
Four benefits are realistic, and the first is not the link.
- Readers. A post on a relevant site sends visitors who already trust the host.
- A link. An in-content, editorial link from a relevant page is among the strongest kinds. Which backlink is best ranks the types.
- Credibility. Being published under your name on a respected site is a trust signal for buyers.
- Relationships. Editors who like one piece often invite another.
What it does not give you: fast rankings. One guest post is one referring domain, and how long backlinks take to work sets expectations.
Does Google allow guest posting?
Yes, with a limit. Google's May 25, 2017 post on large-scale article campaigns says Google "does not discourage these types of articles in the cases when they inform users," and lists "stuffing keyword-rich links to your site in your articles" among the warning signs of a link campaign. Paying for the placement is a separate matter: Google's spam policies treat buying links for ranking purposes as link spam unless the link is tagged rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored".
The line is intent. One article for one audience is guest blogging. Forty near-identical articles with optimised anchors is a campaign. For a longer verdict, read does guest posting still work.
How to start guest posting
You can send your first pitch this week with this sequence.
- List ten sites your customers read. Check that recent posts have real engagement and that authors are people, not "admin".
- Read what they already published so you can pitch a gap, not a repeat.
- Write a three-line pitch: the angle, why their readers care, one proof point from your own work. How to write a guest post that gets accepted has a template.
- Wait three to six weeks before following up once. Bullock's guidelines treat eight weeks of silence as a no.
- Write for the reader, place one useful link, and reply to comments after publication.
If pitching is not your thing, swapping articles with a site owner in your niche gets a link without the cold outreach, and on Backlinkster each swap is verified by API. The trade-offs are in guest posting vs link exchange.
Frequently asked questions
What is guest posting in simple words? It is writing an article for another website's audience, with their approval, in return for credit and usually a link. You are the guest, they are the host.
Can you give an example of a guest post? A cybersecurity founder writes "How to spot a phishing email in 30 seconds" for an accounting blog read by small-business owners. The post carries a short bio and one link to the founder's checklist. That is a guest post.
How do I become a guest blogger? Pick a niche where you have first-hand results, publish a few strong pieces on your own site as proof, then pitch sites with specific angles. Editors want evidence you can write and know the subject.
Is guest posting free? Editorial guest posts are normally free. Sites that charge are selling advertising, and Google expects those links to be tagged sponsored. See how much guest posting costs.
Is guest posting the same as a guest blog? Yes. Guest post, guest blog and guest article all describe the same exchange.
Does guest posting still work in 2026? It does for relevant sites with real readers. It does not for mass-produced posts on sites that sell placements.
