AI Search Statistics (2026): 46 Sourced Numbers

AI Search Statistics (2026): 46 Sourced Numbers

The short version: AI answers now reach billions of people, but they send websites very little traffic. Google says AI Overviews have over 2 billion monthly users, yet AI platforms account for just 0.32% of all website traffic in SE Ranking's 2026 data. When an AI Overview appears, Ahrefs found the top result's clickthrough rate is 58% lower.

Below are 46 statistics, grouped by theme. Every number links to the page where it was published, and each one was checked against that page on 23 October 2026. Each entry gives the year and the sample, because AI search changes quickly and a 2024 figure may already be out of date.

How we collected these

  • Original sources only. Company figures come from the company's own announcement, and study figures from the study itself, not from a list that repeats them.
  • Checked on the page. We opened every source and confirmed the number is there. We dropped figures we couldn't confirm, including widely quoted ChatGPT user counts and a well-known search volume forecast whose source pages we couldn't load.
  • Dated and sized. Studies measure different things with different samples. Where two sources disagree (for example, on how often AI Overviews appear), we show both and say why.

If a number has changed at the source, tell us and we'll update it.

How many people use AI search

  1. Google's AI Overviews have over 2 billion monthly users in more than 200 countries and territories and 40 languages. (Google, Q2 2025 earnings remarks, July 2025)
  2. AI Mode had over 100 million monthly active users in the US and India in July 2025. (Same Google post)
  3. By October 2025, AI Mode had over 75 million daily active users. (Google, Q3 2025 earnings remarks, October 2025)
  4. AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly active users after its global expansion. (Google, Q2 2026 earnings remarks, July 2026)
  5. The Gemini app has 950 million monthly active users. (Same Google post, July 2026)
  6. 34% of US adults say they have used ChatGPT, about double the share in 2023. (Pew Research Center, 5,123 US adults, surveyed February to March 2025)
  7. 58% of US adults under 30 have used ChatGPT. (Same Pew survey)
  8. 28% of employed US adults use ChatGPT for work, up 20 percentage points. (Same Pew survey)
  9. 26% of US adults have used ChatGPT for learning and 22% for entertainment. (Same Pew survey)

Google's numbers count anyone who sees an AI answer in Search, which is why they dwarf the share of people who choose to open a chatbot. For most sites, the AI answer people actually meet is the one at the top of Google.

How often AI answers appear in Google

  1. 18% of Google searches produced an AI summary. (Pew Research Center, 68,879 searches by 900 US adults, March 2025)
  2. AI Overviews appeared for 6.49% of tracked queries in January 2025. (Semrush, 10M+ keywords, January to November 2025)
  3. That share peaked at 24.61% in July 2025. (Same Semrush study)
  4. It then fell back to 15.69% in November 2025. (Same Semrush study)
  5. 91.3% of queries triggering an AI Overview were informational in January 2025. By October, it was 57.1%. (Same Semrush study) AI Overviews are spreading into commercial and transactional searches.
  6. 82% of desktop AI Overviews appeared on keywords with fewer than 1,000 monthly searches. (Semrush, 200,000 keywords, September 2024)
  7. An AI Overview contains 11 links on average and runs 119 words on desktop and 91 on mobile. (Same Semrush study)

Estimates of how often AI Overviews appear vary a lot, from about 6% to 25% in Semrush's tracking alone, because each tool tracks a different keyword set. Treat any single "AI Overviews appear on X% of searches" figure as a snapshot of one dataset.

What AI answers do to clicks

  1. When an AI Overview appears, the top-ranking page gets a 58% lower clickthrough rate on average. (Ahrefs, 300,000 keywords, Google Search Console data from December 2023 and December 2025, published February 2026)
  2. The drop is 50.8% for position 2 and 19.4% for position 10. (Same Ahrefs study)
  3. The same study a year earlier measured a 34.5% drop for the top result. (Ahrefs, 300,000 keywords, March 2024 vs March 2025)
  4. People clicked a regular search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when none did. (Pew Research Center, 900 US adults, March 2025)
  5. People clicked a link inside the AI summary on just 1% of visits. (Same Pew study)
  6. Users ended their browsing session on 26% of pages with an AI summary, against 16% of pages without one. (Same Pew study)
  7. For the same keywords tracked before and after AI Overviews appeared, the zero-click rate fell from 33.75% to 31.53%. (Semrush with Datos, 200,000+ keywords, January to October 2025)

Number 23 cuts against the others. Semrush's measure is whether a search ends with any click at all, while Ahrefs and Pew measure clicks on organic results. Both can be true: people may still click something, just less often your page. Ahrefs notes its figure is a correlation, not proof that the AI Overview caused the drop.

AI referral traffic to websites

  1. AI platforms send 0.32% of all website traffic in 2026, up from 0.24% in 2025 and 0.02% in 2024. (SE Ranking, 101,574 websites in 250 countries and territories, January 2025 to April 2026)
  2. Traffic from AI search engines grew 16x from 2024 to 2026. (Same SE Ranking study)
  3. Organic search still drives 42.75% of all traffic, 134 times more than AI platforms. (Same SE Ranking study)
  4. ChatGPT sends 74.78% of all AI referral traffic. (Same SE Ranking study)
  5. Gemini sends 11.56%, Perplexity 7.23%, Copilot 3.51% and Claude 2.62%. (Same SE Ranking study)
  6. ChatGPT's share fell from 79.74% in 2025, though its referral traffic still grew 27% year over year. (Same SE Ranking study)
  7. An average AI search visitor is 4.4 times as valuable as an organic search visitor, based on conversion rate. (Semrush, 500+ digital marketing and SEO topics, July 2025) Semrush doesn't publish the underlying conversion data.
  8. Semrush projects that, for digital marketing and SEO topics, AI search could send more visitors than traditional search by early 2028. (Same Semrush study) This is a forecast, not a measurement.

AI traffic is small but growing fast, and the visitors it sends tend to arrive further along in their decision. How to track AI search traffic shows how to separate it out in GA4, and do AI answers send traffic to websites? looks at what that traffic is worth.

Which sites AI search cites

  1. Only 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also rank in Google's top 10. (Ahrefs, 863,000 search results and 4 million cited URLs, March 2026)
  2. 31.0% of AI Overview citations come from pages ranking beyond the top 100. (Same Ahrefs study)
  3. The share of AI Overview citations taken from the top 10 fell from about 76% in July 2025 to about 38%. (Same Ahrefs study)
  4. Reddit receives 16.8% of ChatGPT's citations and Wikipedia 7.0%, the top two domains. (Ahrefs, broad US queries, September 2026) This page updates monthly.
  5. Wikipedia's share of citations was 16.3% in ChatGPT, 12.5% in Perplexity and 8.4% in AI Overviews. (Ahrefs, about 957,000 ChatGPT and 953,500 Perplexity prompts plus 76.7 million AI Overviews, June 2025)
  6. YouTube took 16.1% of Perplexity's citations, and Reddit 7.4% of AI Overview citations. (Same Ahrefs study)
  7. 67% of ChatGPT's 1,000 most-cited pages are ones marketers can't realistically earn: Wikipedia (29.7%), homepages (23.8%) and app stores (6.6%) lead the list. (Ahrefs, top 1,000 cited pages, September 2025)
  8. 28.3% of those 1,000 most-cited pages rank for zero organic keywords. (Same Ahrefs study)
  9. Of the cited pages that do rank, 65.3% are on sites with Domain Rating 81 or higher. (Same Ahrefs study)
  10. Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together made up 15% of the sources cited in Google's AI summaries and 17% of standard results. (Pew Research Center, April 2025)

Ranking well no longer guarantees an AI citation, and AI tools lean heavily on a small set of large, often-mentioned sites. Being talked about on other websites is a big part of getting in. Do backlinks help you get cited by ChatGPT? and how to show up in Google AI Overviews cover what you can influence.

How AI bots crawl the web

  1. 80% of AI crawling was for model training, 18% for search and 2% for user actions. (Cloudflare, Cloudflare network data, 12 months to July 2025)
  2. Training's share of AI crawling rose from 72% in July 2024 to 79% in July 2025, while search fell from 26% to 17%. (Same Cloudflare post)
  3. Anthropic's crawlers fetched about 38,000 pages for every visitor they referred in July 2025, down from about 286,900 in January. (Same Cloudflare post)
  4. OpenAI's ratio was about 1,091 crawls per referral in July 2025, down from 1,217 in January. (Same Cloudflare post)
  5. Perplexity's ratio rose from about 54 crawls per referral in January 2025 to about 195 in July. (Same Cloudflare post)

These ratios come from Cloudflare's own network, so they reflect sites that use Cloudflare rather than the whole web. The direction is still clear: AI bots take far more pages than they send visitors back. What is an AI crawler? explains the different bots and how to manage them.

What the numbers add up to

  • AI answers reach almost everyone who searches. Google's own figures run into the billions, and more than a third of US adults have used ChatGPT.
  • They send few clicks. Organic results lose a large share of clicks when an AI Overview appears, and AI platforms send well under 1% of all web traffic.
  • Ranking is no longer enough to be cited. Most AI Overview citations now come from outside the top 10, and AI tools favour sites that are widely referenced elsewhere.

That last point is where links and mentions come back in. Pages that other sites cite tend to be the ones AI tools pick up too. Backlinkster helps you earn those references by trading in-content links one-for-one with owners of related sites, and each swap is verified by API. The free plan includes five swaps a month.
